Cancer Support; Herbal Protocol

Cancer: Number One Killer of Cats and Dogs

One definition of cancer:

** A malignant growth of tissue tending to spread and associated with general ill health and progressive emaciation.

Pet cancer statistics:

**Cancer is the number one killer of cats and dogs: 47%, according to the Morris Animal Foundation.

**The most common cancers in dogs:

Skin tumors, breast cancers, lymphomas and cancer of the mouth and nose. Most common in 32 breeds up from only 21 breeds in 2002.

**The leading non-accidental cause of death in cats is cancer, at 32%.

The most common are mammary tumors, fibrosarcomas, mast cell tumors, and lymphosarcomas.

**Certain breeds of dogs are genetically prone to cancer and need pro-active cancer support with herbal protocols:

Golden Retrievers

Labrador Retrievers

Bernese Mountain Dogs

I suggest being more aggressive with prevention for these breeds, i.e. with super nutritional support. (Green Power every day!)

Many believe cancer is far more prevalent today and becoming an increasing concern for all breeds. There is evidence however indicating that it is not a "disease of modern civilization." Bone cancer has been detected in a dinosaur bone discovered in Wyoming in 1992. There is evidence of cancer in wild animals...from Asian mice, to pelicans, to hawks. Some animals such as wild chimpanzees are believed to ingest Vernonia cinera for its anti-tumour capabilities. Many feel cancer in domesticated small animals is epidemic and are valuable to use for "watch waiting" or even for primary or supportive treatments. There can be no doubt that animals and humans have sought ways to treat cancer throughout history with herbal medicines.

Herbal medicine and supplements can be integrated into conventional cancer care; and, for those unable or unwilling to use radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, herbal medicines offer a valid supportive therapy.

65% of pet owners are using CAM & herbs, yet many do not.

IN HUMANS...Sixty-two percent of the U.S population surveyed said they use some form of complementary or alternative medicine. Most said they do not tell their doctors about it. This is a critical issue because many of the supplements people use can interact or interfere with some medications prescribed by human and animal doctors.

IN PETS...A 2006 study by the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences shows the same trend among pet owners. More than half of the pet owners surveyed said they use complementary medicine to help their cats and dogs. A survey of 254 people whose pets were being treated at the University’s Animal Cancer Center showed that 65 percent were using therapies such as herbs, nutritional supplements, chiropractic care and acupuncture. Disturbingly many of those people said they don’t tell their vets they are receiving these treatments, nor do they seek input on the treatments from a vet.

Quoted recently in Boston Globe article "Veterinarian Charles De Vinne estimates that 10 years ago in his practice, about 75 percent of owners whose dogs or cats were diagnosed with cancer would seek treatment of some kind -- surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or alternative medicine -- rather than letting the disease run its course. Nowadays, he says, ’’the percentage is closer to 90."

"For pet owners who decide not to pursue aggressive measures like chemotherapy, whether for financial or other reasons, quality of life can still be a primary concern. With the right program -- painkillers and the like --the quality of life for a dying animal can ’’skyrocket," says De Vinne.

Their is major growth in the use of Herbal Medicine by the General Public, and many people are using supplements on their pets. Pet owners are seeking their own alternatives to chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, including herbal cancer alternatives for a variety of reasons, cost savings and philosophy are the top two. Many are choosing herbal medicines alone, while others use herbal medicine and conventional treatment together. (In human mortality outcomes tracked in China, the best outcomes were those that were treated with both.)

Herbal Cancer Support Protocol

For long-term on going care, many have found the best results by alternating formulas so the animal does not become used to or unresponsive to a particular formula. Of course, any of the suggestions below can be used singularl over a 2 to 3 month period.

Hoxsey Formula, or Hoxsey Boneset (Osteosarcoma)

Power Shrooms Formula (Reishi, Maitake, Shiitake)

Alternating every couple of weeks with:

Petsiac Formula (Essiac, with Reishi)

Boost Formula

Added to food for Extra Nutritional Support :

Green Power (20:1 concentrated nutrition)

Broccoli Sprouts (Phase 2 liver enzymes/anti-tumor) Hoxsey Formula

Harry Hoxsey’s cancer formula (according to James Duke, Ph.D.).

This formula has some impressive chemical compounds of considerable interest to the National Cancer Institute. “Eight of the herbs in the internal tonic showed anti-tumor activity in controlled laboratory tests. Five showed antioxidant properties as protectants against cancer. All showed antimicrobial properties with activity against viral or bacterial infections. The Hoxsey formula is an ideal application to try to shift an animal’s constitutional tendency away from supporting the growth of these wayward cancer cells, whilst increasing and building the immune response, and stimulating the release of accumulated toxins. Power Shrooms Formula

There are more than 10,000 independent research papers available on polysaccharide immune modulators and their use in cancer treatment. These are research papers from the National Institute of Health, Harvard, Japanese Cancer Society and all of the other major, mainstream research organizations. When someone asks, "Why aren’t these methods being more widely used in cancer treatment?"  We can only point out that these are naturally occurring compounds and therefore difficult to patent.

In China, cancer research and treatment are showing these immunomodulator compounds can help counteract the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation while increasing outcomes against control groups not using herbs. Reishi nourishes the immune system, boosting the life span of white blood cells; its polysaccharides are anti-tumor, anti-viral and boost T-cell function. Maitake targets breast and colorectal cancers; it is very effective for helping the immune system rebound from chemotherapy. Polysaccharide compounds from shiitake exhibited strong anti-tumor activities. To maximize a host-mediated response to awaken the immune system, a panoply of mushroom polysaccharides is best.

Check out this extensive report...."Medicinal Mushrooms: Their Therapeutic Properties and Current Medical Usage with Special Emphasis on Cancer Treatments."This extensive literature review sponsored by the U.K. Governments concluded that while (Mushrooms) are not miracle drugs but can increase the quality of life of cancer patients and may offer increased survival rates for some types of cancer.

Petsiac Formula

This formula was pioneered into existence, with a lifetime of commitment and work by Rene Caisse, R.N., a Canadian nurse. (Essiac is Caisse spelled backwards.) In over 50 years, she successfully treated thousands of patients. Reishi mushroom is used when there is a weakened toxic state to enhance the immune system, increase white cell counts, platelets, hemoglobin and various tumor fighting cells. The deep cleansing effects of essiac combined with reishi help to cleanse and boost the immune system.

Boost Formula

The immune system works constantly to keep environmental disease forces at bay, including viruses, and cancers. It also keeps our animal friend’s normal control factors on course, keeping uncontrolled cell division in check. Our pet’s immune system can get run down, making them susceptible to any number of dangers. This formula addresses a weakened immune system. Recent research into baical skullcap (scute) shows an antibiotic effect against six types of pathogenic bacteria and promising activity against retro-viruses such as HIV. Ginseng’s immuno-stimulating activity is multidimensional. It enhances antibody responses, cell-mediated immunity, and production of interferon. It also increases natural killer cells, acts as a lymphocyte and reticuloendothelial system proliferative and improves phagocytic functions. Astragalus strengthens “Qi” and helps to prevent and fight colds and bacteria. A recent study in Houston found it restored T-cell function in nine out of ten cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Atractylodes is often used with ginseng in immune enhancing formulas. It tonifies the digestion and energy and increases white blood cell count. Kelp is the source for organically bound iodine to maintain a healthy thyroid. Garlic is used to reduce the risk of cancer and infections and is extremely protective of the cardiovascular system. This formula adds up to major support for your animal friend’s immune system. ADD Green Power to the food everyday!

Greens provide the nourishment that most modern companion animals lack in their commercially-processed diets. Dogs eating grass or cats eating houseplants may well be desperate attempts to seek out green nutrition. Chlorophyll (the green in greens) is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesize carbohydrates from CO2 and water (photosynthesis). Chlorophyll is an internal antiseptic, a cell stimulator, red blood builder, and rejuvenator. It relieves respiratory conditions; is nourishes the blood and is beneficial for heart conditions. Chlorophyll is a powerful detoxifier and tonic. It cleanses the blood and builds red blood cells while doing it. Researchers in the early 1980’s discovered that chlorophylls and related chemicals can inhibit the ability of certain DNA-damaging chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. Another experiment by the U.S. Army showed that animals fed chlorophyll-rich greens survived twice as long as other animals when all were exposed to fatal levels of radiation.

Ingredients: 100% organic, 20:1 concentrated juice powders: kamut, barley, oat, spirulina, spinach, carrot, powdered broccoli, parsley dandelion greens, sea kelp, sea dulse, oxyphyte. ADD Brocco SGS (5,500ppm sulphoraphane)

Cancer protection and detoxification support.

According to studies by Dr. Paul Talalay and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, sulphoraphane enhances the cancer-protective capacity of animal cells. Sulphoraphane induces Phase Two (detoxification) enzymes, these are the enzymes that deactivate carcinogens and free radicals, thereby enhancing the bodies own defense system against cancer-causing chemicals.

Who should consider supplementation with Broccoli Sprout Powder?

Any person dealing with or having dealt with cancer in the past, and is wanting to be sure of chemoprevention;

Those dieting and therefore coping with the releasing of toxins back into the system;

Those wanting to guarantee at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables in their daily diet;

Those wanting to reinforce detoxification.
